Jose Arguelles, believed the world was in trouble. The new age author and spiritual leader, became convinced the world was in a downward spiral and heading straight into disaster. He believed the Mayan hell cycles were to blame and only he could save the world. So, in order to bring about change, in the summer of 1987, Arguelles, and his followers organized the largest synchronized meditation in history. And there was only one place in the United States, that could provide the power he needed to accomplish this ambitious event: Sedona, Arizona – the United States’ Mecca of spirituality.

Sedona, Arizona is considered to be a national treasure and countless people flock there to see it’s breathtaking red sandstone rock formations. Tourism aside, many regard Sedona is a place of potent spiritual power. The faithful believe there are a number of vortexes that raise the energy to a supernatural level.

For those who don’t know, a vortex is believed to be a doorway to another realm of higher spiritual thought. Some Sedona devotees believe that another world is situated above Sedona, hidden away from us until we get our act together and abandon our warlike ways.

It would be easy to dismiss this as nothing more than mere superstition. However, scientists have recorded unusual electro-magnetic energy throughout the area. They believe this peculiar energy may cause the altered states of conciousness visitors have reported for decades. Let’s take a look at some of the rock formations that people believe hold this energy.

Mystics believe that Bell Rock is a toning device that balances psychic energy. According to them, if you hold on to the rock while meditating, you might be contacted by primordial Earth spirits. While others believe the rock attracts visitors from other worlds. This could explain why so many UFO sightings have been made near Bell Rock.

The Yavapai consider Boynton canyon to be a sacred place of extraordinary spiritual insight. They believe the gods of old breathed life into the first woman there. Her spirit is believed to still reside in the canyon. This could explain encounters with the ghostly figure of a woman in the canyon. She is said to exude a feeling of peace and well-being.

Cathedral rock is believed to be the location of the largest vortex and the greatest concentration of spiritual power. Many tourists have insisted Cathedral Rock appears to glow at night and hums during the day. People have claimed to witness apparitions of ancient people acting as if they are worshipping the rock.

A place of such intense spiritual power would not be complete without a good ghost story. Miller House is a private residence near Sedona where a former resident reported being haunted by something aggressive. The home received its name when it was owned by actor and dancer, Ann Miller. After experiencing some strange and frightening activity in her home, Ann was convinced her home was haunted by a Hopi warrior. Ann, was desperate to rid her home of the ghost. So, she did the only thing she could think of, she contacted the local Hopis for help.

When the Hopi shaman arrived, he quickly identified two spirits residing in the house. The first, a guardian spirit who was displeased the house was built over a sacred site. The ground the house was built over was a Kiva, a place used for communing with powerful spiritual beings known as Kachina. The second spirit was the son of a former owner who died while building the house. The Hopi shaman went about the daunting task of exorcising the house of the unwanted spirits. Apparently, the exorcism worked, as there hasn’t been any more hauntings at Miller House.

Whether or not you believe in its potent spiritual power, all would agree Sedona, Arizona is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. If you should ever visit, be respectful. It’s a sacred place of great positive energy.
