The Classic Tarot Deck
“The True Tarot is in symbolism; it speaks no other language and offers no other signs.” – Dr. Arthur Edward Waite
You have seen the images contained within the Rider Waite Tarot Deck in countless movies. Its images are the archetypal images upon which countless decks have been created.
The origins of the original tarot decks are still unknown. Since the late 18th century, the thought has been that they originated in ancient Egypt based upon images from the Book of Thoth. Their use in Europe was first written about in the late 14th century about a card game already in place across Europe. It wasn’t until the mid-15th century that the 56 cards of the Minor (or Lesser) Arcana was combined with the 22 cards of the Major Arcana thereby creating the Tarot as we know it today.
Under the direction of the esoteric scholar and practitioner, AE Waite, worked with fellow esotericist and artist Pamela Colman Smith in 1909 to redraw the Tarot deck completely and fuse it with magical archetypes. In doing so, their deck helped to establish the four suits of the Minor Arcana (Pentacles, Swords, Cups, Wands) with their respective archetypal meanings. Moreover, the twenty-two cards of the Major Arcana had intensive meaning imbued into their imagery. The Rider-Waite deck works so well because of their effort. The Rider Waite incorporates within the art of each card the imagery that is necessary to give yourself, or someone else, a very productive reading with little practice.
Not all Tarot use has to be serious. These cards are fun for the park, beach, parties or even a nice stroll through a graveyard.
Each deck contains the original Colman Smith tarot art with the hand-drawn labels on standard 4″x1.75″ sized Tarot cards. You will also find a fold-out pamphlet in each deck that contains the basic information about each card that will help you get started with meaningful Tarot readings right out of the box. Pulling cards is easy. Understanding each card takes study and practice. To have the cards tell you a story takes both time and practice.
And there is no better deck with which to begin your Tarot journey that the Rider Waite deck.
